Directing Notes

Evolution of the Director
Director as author (when a director take a text and did it his own way. Text serves the purpose of director instead of the other way round. Balance between text serving director and director serving the text)
Idea of director at the end of the 19th century
Society reflects theatre

Mrs Moons plays : Themes in the Images Shown
A thousand cranes – Orient, Red (red sun), (design of the kimono as the design of the set), simple
Thoroughly Modern Millie – Hustle Bustle of colour
Aladdin – dreamy
Twelfth Night – Carefree

What you can do to understand texts that we read
·      Roots of the play (Last days – Judas’ betrayal of Jesus, being between heaven and hell (all done something to get where they are),
·      Polarity (constant changing of emotions, characters are constantly changing throughout the course of a play), where is the polarity in a play
·      Beginning of the play – in medias res
·      Dialogue is the façade – SUBTEXT!!!

Artaud (quote) in the 50s
·      dictator ship of speech
·      All these things are minor part of theatre
·      Mis en scene are not a part of the production
·      Theatre was enslaved to speech
·      Gesture and mime
·      Posture
·      Attitudes
·      Object intonations
·      These things exist apart from the text. They’re just a craft
·      Putting focus on the wrong thing
·      Realisations of theatre relies on the Mis en Scene

Mis en scene – bringing together in a given time of different signifiers on stage (things that if we see it we relate to it), Process of montage (forward to background ect.)
